NC America Says AION 2 Success Is About More Than Launch Numbers: Durability and Trust Matter

AION 2 is about to enter Advanced Access, but NC America is already framing success on a much longer timeline than launch day.

In an interview published by MMORPG.com on September 28, NC America Vice President of Operations Merv Lee Kwai explained what he will use to judge the global release. A big opening matters, but he described two broader tests: whether AION 2 feels true to the franchise and whether the MMO has enough durability to remain healthy after the initial rush.

Franchise identity is part of the scorecard

Kwai pointed to the experience of developers who previously worked on the original AION and said honoring that legacy is one component of success.

That puts player perception alongside conventional launch metrics. Steam activity, server demand and participation will be visible immediately, but the global release also has to convince returning AION players that the sequel carries forward the identity of the series.

The harder test begins after launch

The more important long-term point is durability. Kwai tied that idea to continuing to produce content, maintaining community trust and keeping the MMO healthy over time.

A launch spike can show demand, but it cannot answer questions about update cadence, post-launch fixes, communication or whether players still have meaningful goals months later.

Kwai also described the MMO genre as being in one of its lower moments. Large online games are expensive and risky, but he does not view the genre as permanently declining; interest has historically risen and fallen in cycles.

The interview discusses NC America’s goals rather than announcing a new content roadmap. Specific global updates, schedules and features should still be treated as confirmed only when NC, AION 2 or Steam publishes them officially.
